Chapter Six

Colin had spent plenty of hours sleeping in places that were new and different but there was nothing quite like sleeping next to JJ. He’d slept more soundly than he had in years, and he didn’t doubt it was due to the man who was still in his arms. He didn’t even feel bad for lying awake and watching the man sleep for the past hour.

Little Jeremiah Josten was definitely not so little anymore, but he hadn’t changed his helpful bent. The way he’d run back with Colin’s inhaler when he’d been on the edge of an attack earlier was proof of that, and yet the guy didn’t take care of himself.

Good thing JJ had him. He’d take care of JJ while JJ insisted on seeing to everyone else. He brushed a kiss against JJ’s forehead and rolled out of bed. A quick glance at the clock showed it was just past five a.m. local time and much too early for visitors like the one who had pulled into JJ’s drive way mere moments before.

He threw on his pants and t-shirt and pulled JJ’s door closed behind him. A quick glance in the kitchen showed the dog was in his crate in the corner of the kitchen watching him from a sitting position.

“Good boy,” he whispered as he walked to the front door and peered out.

The face on the other side of the peephole froze him for a second before he hurriedly undid the locks. The last thing he wanted was for his father to ring the bell.

Douglass Shellford checked him over from the top of his head to his bare feet and back again. Before Colin could think of what to say, his dad had reached out and had him in a crushing hug. Just as quickly, Douglas released him and he stared into eyes that matched his own icy blue.

“All right there, Colin?”

“Yes, sir.”

They stood staring at each other until his father raised his eyebrows and Colin realized he’d left the man standing on the stoop like a door to door salesman.

“Sorry. Come in.”

It felt strange letting anyone into JJ’s house while the man still slept, and it definitely put a crimp in his plans to wake JJ up with the type of loving he’d hoped to give him after last night’s failure.

“I held your mother off as long as I could, but as soon as the birds started singing she was she was demanding I come and get you . She threatened to walk here, barefooted, if I didn’t come and bring you home immediately.”

His father looked around with interest, his gaze drawn to the same wall that had captivated him so much last night. His father shook his head and smiled at Colin.

“You know, everyone knows he makes a point to get a photo outside the center after each event, but I don’t think anyone has ever bothered to find out what he did with them. The guys all just thought it was one of his peculiarities.
